About
The Commonwealth of Rockall, more commonly known as Rockall, is a micronation in Europe. Its territory in the North Atlantic consists of the uninhabited islet of Rockall and the nearby Hasselwood Rock, however Rockall also administers overseas territories around the world. As the islet of Rockall is uninhabitable, the Rockallish government is based outside its mainland territory.
Rockallish citizens declared their nation’s independence from the United Kingdom on 4 January 2025. This declaration established Rockall as a parliamentary republic.
Rockall as a micronational project aims to raise awareness of the colonial injustices committed by the UK and other states that are still unresolved to this day. Rockall attempts to present an alternative to the contemporary British state in a humorous and tong-in-cheek way. For this reason Rockall adopts the visual aesthetic of a British Overseas Territory, the kind synonymous with offshore tax havens, and uses the absurdity of the British claim to the islet to legitimise its own nationhood.
Behind its imperial facade Rockall actually embraces republican, decolonial and ecological ideals. Given Rockall’s disputed territorial claim, the nation’s foreign policy takes a neutral position regarding any counter claims to the islet of Rockall, this includes accepting the claims of other micronations over it.
National Territory
To clarify; Rockall's territorial claims as a micronation are done in a humorous and satirical way, we do not claim to seriously own these locations. Our claims are merely symbolic, and therefore in practice, we respect the sovereignty of the nations that claim them. We do not recommend that you visit these areas, if you do so, you do it at your own risk. So called ‘citizenship’ of this micronation does not give a person the right to enter or reside in any of these territories.
